The mornings in the valley have been turning cold, you will have noticed. You may be asking yourself how to put your home’s plumbing in order before the wet season is upon us, or what minor troubles are likely to become major when the temperature falls.
There is no better time of year than fall to put an end to such issues. We at Evenflo Plumbing have a few decades under our belt of prepping homes and businesses for winter in the Mid and Southern Willamette Valley. Should you want to go over any of the items on this list with us, pick up the phone at (541) 230-3477.
Our local experience runs back to 2001 in the Willamette Valley (we have been in business since 1989). In that time we have put to work more than 20 years’ worth of know-how for people in Corvallis, Albany, Eugene, Lebanon, Philomath, Springfield and the rest of the area.
Why Your Plumbing Needs Attention in the Fall
Once fall is here the Willamette Valley has its share of rain and the ground does not dry out for months. Your sump pump and outdoor pipes as well as your drains will be put to the test. The more expedient and less costly it is to remedy a weak spot the earlier you make it known.
All too often one does not give a thought to the plumbing until there is trouble. A bit of forethought now will spare you from some cold and wet in January or December.
A Few Things to Check Before Winter
- Put the garden hoses away and drain them to prevent water from freezing in the spigot
- Inspect any exposed pipe in an unheated basement, garage or crawl space for wear and tear
- Pour some water in the sump pit and see if the pump comes on
- Be on the lookout for slow drains; they are usually a clog in the making
- Hear a faucet dripping or a toilet running? It is a waste of money and water
- Any musty odour or dampness could be a leak hiding in plain sight
If you come across something you are uncertain of, we can have a look at it.
Put Your Water Heater in Order
Cold water coming in means the heater has to run longer to do its job in the colder months. If yours is a few years old it makes sense to have it looked at in the fall.
Be alert for:
- Hot water that is not hot enough
- Some rumbling or popping of the tank
- Discoloration or rust in the water
- Moisture at the base of the unit
We do repairs and installation alike so we can put your mind at ease whether a tune-up or new unit is called for. (541) 230-3477.
Drains Should Be Clearing Well
You are inside more in the fall and putting more of a load on your kitchen and bathroom drains with all the cooking. Do not let a slow drain from the summer turn into a blockage, get it cleared.
Ours is a water-jet method of cleaning which keeps harsh chemicals out of your pipes. It is a cleaner approach to removing buildup and better for the valley.
Flooding in the Wet Season
Given the amount of rain, a sump pump is hard to do without. When it gives out in a storm you can be left with a flooded basement by morning. We do sump pump repair and installation to ensure you are prepared for what is to come. For older sewer or drain lines we also do the excavation, pipe relining and sewer line repair.
